Covid-19 in ASEAN with Special Reference to Cambodia

Start Date: 01/09/2021

End Date: 31/03/2022

Project Objective

  • Extend understanding of the impact of Covid 19 on poverty and inequality gained from survey-based and qualitative research in Cambodia.
  • Contribute to designing policies and interventions which will mitigate the pandemic impacts and build back better in Cambodia.

Project Description

Cambodia has so far had limited direct experience of the pandemic, however, indirect effects have been several – disruption of migration, investment, tourism, garments and regional agricultural and other exports. In 2021 there have also been some movement restrictions. This situation makes Cambodia a natural experiment in the how the impacts of such economic shocks are absorbed by a society where poverty was being rapidly reduced, economic transformation was progressing with both ‘growth from below’ and ‘growth from above’ occurring, and human development was also showing signs that some intersecting inequalities were being reduced.
