Impacts of Climate Change on Displacement Patterns in Kratie, Mondulkiri and Stung Treng Provinces, Cambodia

Start Date: 01/05/2023

End Date: 01/09/2023

Project Objective

This study aims to investigate the linkages between climate change and migration in Cambodia. Three sub-objectives are addressed hereunder.

  • To understand the past and recent trends of climate change, environmental degradation, and extreme weather events in the study areas;
  • To identify the migration patterns in the study areas in relation to climate change trends and gradual and sudden-onset environmental events; and
  • To explore the impacts of climate change and other factors on migration.

Project Description

Links between climate change and migration in Cambodia need to be empirically substantiated. It is known that climate change poses a threat to agricultural production and impacts men and women in different ways in terms of a shift in employment, access to resources and assets, social norms and gender stereotypes, socioeconomic opportunities, and adoption of new technologies. Yet, these impacts need to be factored in regarding displacement patterns and migration.
