A Rapid Assessment of the Journalism Education Ecosystem in Cambodia

Project Description
In the era of digital technologies, the rise of social media has widened everyone's access to information. In conjunction with many benefits, there lurk several harms as, in the same manner as authentic news, fake news can also spread speedily through these social media platforms. To prevent such disinformation, misinformation, and micro-targeted propaganda, media professionals need to ensure that news consumers are provided with professional and verified information and news. Professional news media acts as a guardian of public interest. Citizens cannot exercise and enjoy their citizenship in the absence of crucial information and knowledge, which well-trained journalists are best placed to provide. Thus, journalism education and professional journalistic standards are essential to bring out the potential of media systems to foster democracy, dialogue, accountability, and public trust.
Project Objective

The present study aims to contribute to the quality improvement of journalism education in Cambodia through the examination of the current situation of the journalism education ecosystem in Cambodia. Specifically, the study will map higher education institutions and media organisations that offer journalism education courses and programmes and assess their characteristics, capacities, the adequacy and effectiveness of these curriculums and training modules, and their sustainability strategies. Based on the data, the study will provide key recommendations to strengthen journalism education programmes and provide a roadmap outlining possible steps to achieve this. The following key points constitute the examination of the journalism education ecosystem:

  1. Challenges and issues faced by journalism education (both formal education at the higher education level, and informal training programs).
  2. A review of 4-year media-degree curriculums offered by universities in Cambodia
  3. Mapping and reviewing the journalism training programs and modules offered by various institutions and organisations.
